Heart Safe Community

Every second counts when someone suffers from out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. The Chino Valley Fire District has partnered with the Chino Valley Fire Foundation in an effort to increase survivability from sudden cardiac arrest by making Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) readily accessible in public places and making the Chino Valley a Heart Safe Community.

What is A Heart Safe Community

HeartSafe Community Chino ValleyHeart Safe Community is a program designed to increase survivability from sudden out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The intent is to strengthen the “chain of survival,” as described by the American Heart Association, by recognizing and stimulating efforts by individual communities to improve their system to prevent sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) from becoming irreversible death.

The Heart Safe model allows cities, counties, and states the ability to establish a set of minimum criteria its communities must meet to achieve Heart Safe status.

Examples of such criteria include:

•    Widespread CPR instruction
•    Public access defibrillators
•    Aggressive resuscitation protocols for first responders and area hospitals

There are no fees and no central authority governing the Heart Safe community program. It is designed to be an open source of best practices, lessons learned, and shared ideas to prevent death from cardiac injury.

Automated External Defibrillators

There are several AEDs in various community buildings throughout the Chino Valley, but more are needed.

The Fire District partnered with the Chino Valley Fire Foundation, the Chino Police Foundation, Chino Valley Medical Center, and the Chino Hills Police Department (San Bernardino County Sheriffs Chino Hills Substation) to show a unified commitment to making the Chino Valley a heart safe community.
