Weed Abatement

Wildland fires are a problem in Southern California. In an effort to reduce the threat of wildland fires, the Chino Valley Fire District enforces the weed abatement requirements outlined in the Fire Code and Health and Safety Code.

How the Weed Abatement Program Works

Each spring, Fire Inspectors will conduct property inspections for weeds and/or rubbish that present, or potentially present, a fire hazard. Properties must be clear of weed and rubbish at this time. All properties are to be clear of weeds each year by May 15th.

Fire inspectors will identify property for fire hazards.

If a hazard exists, a violation notice will be written and a $130 non-compliance fee will be assessed.

If the weeds are removed before the May 15th inspection date no fee is assessed. If, however, there are weeds and rubbish present, you will be required to remove the hazard and will be assessed a $130 non-compliance fee.

If no action is taken to abate the problem, the Fire District will administer the removal of the hazard at the property owner's expense. Charges billed, and if not paid will appear on your next property tax bill, are as follows:

- $130 non-compliance fee

- $200 administration fee

- The cost of clearing the property

The legal owner-of-record at the time the property is cited is responsible for these charges.

Fire-Safe Your Home and Property

Each year, hundreds of homes and acres of land are destroyed by wildland fires. Using fire-safe landscaping around your home can protect your property from such devastating fires. The Chino Valley Fire District encourages you to take precautions in landscaping your property to minimize possible fire damage.

Fire Safety Minimum Requirements Outside the Home

Clear all Flammable Vegetation Adjacent to your Home

- Maintain a minimum of 30 feet of brush clearance around any building or structure. Extra hazardous conditions may require up to 200 feet of clearance.

- Remove accumulation of hazardous refuse.

- Stack woodpiles at least 20 feet from buildings, combustible materials and a minimum of 15 feet from tree limbs.

- Remove all needles, leaves and other dead vegetative growth from roofs, eaves and rain gutters.

- Clear deadwood from trees or other vegetation adjacent to or overhanging a building.

- Maintain 10 feet of clearance between roof surfaces and any trees.

- Maintain trees so that no leafy foliage, twigs, or branches are within 6 feet of the ground.

Chimney Safety

- Chimney and flue openings must be covered with ½ inch wire mesh spark arrester, visible from the ground.

- Remove tree limbs extending within 10 feet of chimney openings.

Keep All Roadways Clear and Unobstructed

- Roadways shall have a minimum unobstructed vertical clearance of 13 feet 6 inches.

- Remove and clear all flammable vegetation or other combustible growth within 10 feet of each side of the roadway.

- Post the street address using 4-inch minimum numbers on contrasting background to ensure visibility from the street.

Vacant Properties

Vacant properties less than 5 acres are required to be mowed or disked completely while parcels larger than 5 acres require a minimum 100 ft. perimeter break with additional 100 ft. breaks dividing the property.
